These guidelines explain how the AssureID Customer Experience Program collects information and how the information can be used. This statement does not apply to other online or offline Acuant websites, software, or services.
Why does Acuant collect information about the operation and performance of the AssureID software?
The information helps Acuant make improvements to the performance and accuracy of the document authentication capabilities of the AssureID software. The information is aggregated and analyzed to identify potential functional or performance issues. Corrections can then be made to address these issues and released in future software updates thereby improving the overall customer experience. By collecting this information, Acuant can ensure that the AssureID software and document library continues to have the most complete and accurate authentication capabilities available.
Does Acuant collect or process personal information under the Customer Experience Program?
No, the data collected is 100% de-identified anonymous data. No personally identifiable information (PII) about you, the customer, the operator of the software, or those whose documents are authenticated by the software will be stored or transmitted to Acuant under any circumstances. The collected data DOES NOT include any images or partial images of the documents that are processed. The only information collected that relates to the document being processed is the type of the document (e.g. “USA Passport, Series 2006e”). This information is required in order to correlate performance issues with the document type so that improvements can be made to the AssureID document library.
How is information collected?
AssureID contains an internal data collection mechanism that is capable of storing information about the operation and performance of the AssureID software. During the software installation process, you may choose whether or not to participate in this program. After the software has been installed, you always have the option of changing your participation in this program by altering the AssureID system settings.
If you choose to not participate in this program, no information will be collected, stored, or transmitted to Acuant.
If you choose to participate in this program, information is collected locally on each participating computer. This data will then be transmitted to Acuant automatically on a regular basis with no user intervention required. These transmissions will occur in the background on each computer and should not impact nor slow down normal operations of the computer.
In some cases, it may not be possible for a computer to automatically transmit this data to Acuant because the computer does not have a direct Internet connection or cannot access the Acuant data collection web service. In these situations, you may still participate in this program by using one of two alternative data transmission options:
- A server-based proxy is available to route the collected information through a common computer (server) that has a direct Internet connection. This enables customers with tight security to participate in the program by only requiring that this one computer have Internet access to the Acuant data collection web service.
- You may also manually retrieve the collected information from each computer and transmit it to Acuant via email or file upload.
What types of information can be collected?
The AssureID Customer Experience Program will collect operational and performance metrics for the AssureID software. This data contains information that is useful for diagnosing operational performance and improving the recognition and authentication of documents supported by the AssureID document library.
AssureID relies on the collection of metadata (non-personal information) on the document recognition and authentication process. Instead of containing information about the document being processed, this metadata contains information about the processes that are run and the details and outcome of those processes. By analyzing this information, Acuant can optimize performance of the AssureID software and library and improve the reliability of the document read and authentication processes. The types of information collected may include, but are not limited to:
- Basic software and hardware information, such as operating system version and language, device models and manufacturers, or memory and hard disk size
- AssureID software information, such as product version and configuration settings
- Device information, such as device model and device settings
- Anonymous information about each document transaction, including:
- Details about the document classification process (used to identify the document type), including the actual document issuer, type, and series of the document
- Details about the field extraction process, including positional information on where data fields were located on the document and OCR confidence values. Actual information that is printed or encoded on the document is not included
- Details about the authentication process, including the overall authentication result and information about each authentication test performed and associated metadata
- Timing information on how long the overall process and specific sub-processes required
The Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer may also be collected because the computer is connecting to an online service (web service) to send the collected information. However, the IP address is never correlated or stored with the other collected information and will not be used as part of this program. The IP address will never be used for identification purposes.
Who can use the information and how can it be used?
Acuant uses the information collected to improve the AssureID product, and specifically, to improve the performance, recognition, and authentication reliability of documents encountered by Acuant’s customers.
The information collected will only by used by Acuant or its licensed OEM partners cooperating in the development of new identity document products available to Acuant and will not be shared with other third-party companies or individuals. Acuant may share aggregate information with third-parties. However, aggregate information is used for statistical analysis and does not contain specific information from individual customers.
Information Sharing
Acuant may occasionally hire other companies to provide limited services on its behalf, such as providing customer support, processing transactions, or performing statistical analysis of reports. Acuant will provide these companies only the information they need to deliver these services. They are required to maintain the confidentiality of the information and are prohibited from using it for any other purpose.
Security Practices
Acuant is committed to helping protect the security of the information we collect. The AssureID Customer Experience Program uses multiple security technologies and procedures to help protect information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. For example, information sent to Acuant is protected using encryption technology. The information is then stored on computer servers with controlled access.
Changes to this statement
Acuant may update these Customer Experience Program Guidelines. If we do, we will revise the “Last updated” information at the top of the statement. To stay informed about how we are helping protect the information collected by the AssureID Customer Experience Program, we encourage you to periodically review these guidelines.
